the pep talk: stop letting this hold you back
At just 15 years old, Coco Gauff is the youngest player to make it to the third round of the U.S. Open since 1996. She is an undeniable prodigy, and it is incredible to watch her go head-to-head with athletes who have been playing professional tennis since before she was born. But what is even more impressive is her mental focus and poise in the face of pro-athlete level pressure.
In the first match, Coco lost the first set to her opponent and faced being eliminated from the tournament. Here’s how she describes recovering from that situation:
“After the first set I had to kind of reset reset and stop thinking about what will happen after the match and just think about what I need to do to win the second set.”
In other words, she stopped stressing about the future and focused on what needed to happen in the present.
Some of you are on the brink of starting something new, and the uncertain future is holding you back: the questions you will have to answer, the things you will have to figure out, the proverbial bridges you will have to cross.
Let’s learn a lesson from Coco today. Forget about the uncertain future for a moment and focus on what needs to happen right now.
