the pep talk: how to overcome discouragement
It’s still early in the year, but not so early that we haven’t experienced disappointments, setbacks, and obstacles on our entrepreneurial journeys. Already in 2019 I’ve been told no, had something take longer and feel harder than I expected, and had my fair share of panic-button moments. Maybe you can relate.
Perseverance on this journey requires us to cultivate hope when we experience discouragement.
Brene Brown, in her book Dare to Lead, describes exactly how to cultivate hope in the midst of feelings of discouragement, and even despair.
Identify a goal. You're discouraged because what you are experiencing now isn’t what you want, and you feel like things won't ever change. Identifying a goal means painting a picture of the change you want to experience.
Define a pathway. Figure out how you will achieve your goal, “even if it involves a plan b and scrappiness”
Own your agency. Believe in your own ability to stay on the path until you get there.
